Three families of Coady's each believed to be unrelated to the other at the time of setting in the Margaree area, played a prominent part in the development of the district of North East Margaree. These were Patrick Coady, who settled at Portree, James Coady known as "Coady the Post” and four brothers named James, Martin, John and Peter, born in Tipperary, Ireland, who settled in North East Margaree and Southwest Margaree. Each of these three families will be dealt with separately in the following sketches.
A
native of Ireland, Patrick married Mary Ingraham daughter of Hezekiah Ingraham,
progenitor of the Ingraham family of North East Margaree. Living first at Egypt
in the Margaree Valley area he sold his property to Joseph Dabson and moved to
another property acquired at Portree. Of his daughters, Mary married John
Munro, first of that name in Margaree; Maria married Joseph Burton, Marsh
Brook, Amelia married Murdock Ross, Portree; Amenia married Richard Levis
Portree; and Sarah married "Big" John MacLeod, Marsh Brook. The sons
of Patrick Coady were Wiliam, John and Peter the latter dying in youth. Of the
two surviving sons, William married Ellen Trenholm, and their children were
Peter lst, and John who died aged three and four years respectively, (Mary J.
Fred Cadman) Minnie (Mrs, Randlett); Peter 2nd; (Eva Evangeline )
who died unmarried while quite young; Katy (Catherine) and, wife of Theodore
Coady, George W and R. Judson, who lived in the Canadian West. George W. the
second named, married Lexie, daughter of William Morrison, and lived for a time
on the home property at Portree and later moved to Margaree Centre where he
died. His children were Willena and Eva who died while young girls and one son
Judson F. This son, Judson F. married Ellen MacKinnon of Sydney, daughter of
A.W. (Sandy) MacKinnon, formerly 0f, Big Intervale. Their children are Joan
R.N. Inverness and George and Eloise, Annie Clark (Mrs, Philip Buchana),
Ontario was brought up in the Coady home.
John Coady son of Patrick, married Ellen Shanahan
of Mabou and lived at Portree His children were Patrick who died in early
manhood; John who settled in the United States; Grace married John MacLeod, son of "Big" John MacLeod,
Marsh Brook; Geogenia (Mrs.Dan MacKinnon); Kempton, United States; Ethel (Mrs.
Ed MacKinnon) and Theodore. The last
named, Theodore married Catherine MacLeod, daughter of "Big" John
MacLeod,, and his family were, Laura# James, Helen,
William, Sadie, Kempton, and Katie. On the death of his wife Theodore moved to
the United States with all his family except Kathie, was brought up by her uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. John MacLeod.
Later Katie moved to the United States with her uncle and aunt where she later married John Van Vliet. Theodore married a
second time after moving to the States his second wife being Catherine of Katy
Coady, daughter of William and had a family of two.
A native of Ireland, he came to North East
Margaree from Newfoundland where he had been employed for a time, and settled
at Lake O'Law where he married a sister of the wife of Oliver Bennett of Big
Brook. He was a one armed man, but despite this handicap, lived a fairly active
life. He carried the first mail to North East Margaree his route being from
Munro's point, Boulardie, through Baddeck and Middle River to Margaree Harbour
For the first part of his contract term he carried the mail on foot in an unlocked
bag, but later acquired a horse and wagon for his work.
His children were Peter, Thomas, another whose name is not remembered a daughter Ann who became the second. wife of James Coady of Big Brook and Margaret (Maggie) 'Who lived for many years with the James J. Ross family and later moved to Sydney where she died. After the father died his son Thomas Continued to operate *he mail route for a time and later moved to the United States there where he died unmarried.
As previously mentioned, four Coady Brothers,
James, Martin, John and Peter, came to the Margaree area from Tipperary
Ireland. Of these only the ones who were directly connected with North East
Margaree and lived therein will be dealt with in this sketch.
Three
of these brothers, John' Martin, and Peters were the victims of a drowning
accident in the Margaree River some years after their arrival in the new land.
James, the first named of the four Tipperary brothers married Margaret Butler
in Ireland before coming to Cape Breton and had a family Of nine' namely;
James, John, Patrick, William, Margaret, Ellen, Mary and Peter. Of these
Michael, the first named known locally as "Michael Miraachi" on
account of having lived for a time at Mirmachi, New Brunswick, married the
widow of Maurice Fitzgerald nee Mary MacDaniel and there children were James,
Martin, Peters Wry Ann (Mrs, David Fleming) Bras d'Or, Ellen (Mrs. Francis
Dunlap) of Bras d'Or and Margaret who was unmarried.
Micheal
"Mirachi" following the death of his first wife married Kate or
Cassie of Marsh Brook, and 'by this marriage there was one daughter Mary, who
went to the United States. James Coady, grandson "Mirmachi" settled
in the Bras d'Or area.
James
Coady, eldest son of Michael "Mimachi" lived at Big Brook and later
at Emerald where he died. He was married three times. His first wife was Sarah
Murphy, daughter of John Murphy of Big Brook. By this marriage there were two
daughters namely Mary Jane who married Peter P. Coady of Emerald and Elizabeth
who married Laurie Hutchenson formerly of Tatamagouche and settled in the
United States. His second wife was Ann Coady daughter of James Coady (Coady the
Post) by whom there was the daughter, Margaret Ellen, ,who married Hugh J. Gillis
of Southwest Margaree. His third wife was Christine by whom there was no
children.
Martin
Coady, one of the four Tipperary brothers, settled at Southwest Margaree. The
names of his children were; Pierre, John, James, Martin, Patrick, Michael,
Nellie (Mrs. MacIntosh) and Mary (Mrs. Waul) Pierre, son of Martin of Tipperary
married Mary, daughter of Nicholas Tompkins lst. and the children of this union
were Peter P., Martin, Nicholis, James P., Julia (Mrs, James M. Murphy) Sarah
(Mrs, Alexander Sandy Tompkins) of Big Brook, and Rebecca (Mrs. Michael Murphy)
of Murphy, and who later married Harry Dimock.
Peter
P. the first named of Pierre Coady's children married Mary Jane Coady, daughter
of James Coady and Sarah (Murphy) Coady, and settled at Emerald, names of their
children are Vincent J. Emerald; Evelyn (Mrs. Dave MacDonald) Emerald; Allan
Peter who died some Years ago; Gertrude (Mrs. Gerard MacLennan), Troy Inverness
county and Francis who married Irene
(Miller) Coady and settled in Sydney
Martin Coady, son of Pierre, died in California, unmarried. Nicholis,
son of Pierre, married Mary, Ann Dunn, daughter of Michael Dunn and lived at
Big Brook. James P. son of Pierre married Mrs.Katie Miller, widow of Charles
Miller and daughter of Moses Doyle of Margaree Forks. They had one adopted
daughter named Irene who married Francis Coady.
John Coady, son of Martin of Tipperary, married
Mary Flynn and their children were Martin unmarried, John who married Sarah
oats and moved to New Waterford, Michael who married Ann Stewart of Big
Intervale; Peter and Ellen unmarried; and Kate and James who went to the United
States.
