The Doyle Family

 

The progenitor of the Doyles of Margaree was Moses Doyle, nicknamed "Mogue" son of James Coady and Ann O'Brien from County Wexford, Ireland. Mogue was the leader of a company of United Irishmen in the Irish Rebellion of 1799 and was taken prisoner. He escaped from prison and got to America in 1799. He had two  uncles in Cape Breton one Lawrence Kavanaugh who was afterwards elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, the first Catholic member of Parliament, with whom he stayed and worked for some years. He returned to Ireland about 1902 or 1803 after the passing of an Act Which granted pardon to the Rebels. Then he married Judith O'Neill in 1906 and from this union four children were born. James, Ann Mary and Sarah. James was born in 1807 on a farm his father field on rent from Earl Fitz William at Olart Hill, near the town of Ennis Corthy, Parish of Farno, on the banks of the river Slaney.

 

Ann married James Murphy and they moved to Minnesota; Sarah Married James Coady of Margaree Forks; James ferried Maggie Murphy, Sister of Ann's husband. These Murphy's were children of Michael Murphy and Sarah Pannell. Michael Murphy was born in Wexford, Ireland, landed first in Newfoundland where he married Sarah Pennell at River Head: Harbor Grace in 1808', then came to Nova Scotia, finally settling at Lake O'Law in 1821. Martin Murphy now lives in that farm. Besides James and Margaret (Maggie), their children Bridget (married to Pat Burns) John, (married to Esther Ross) and Nellie (married to Mike Nolan) all had large families.

 

Mary, daughter of Mogue Doyle, died with her mother, Judith O'Neill in infancy, and Mogue married the second time to Maryin Lawlor. He came to Margaree in 1824. His son, James came out to this country in 1828 bringing his stepmother (Lawlor) and his sister Sarah. Ann came a few years later. James' family consisted of John, Moses, Miles James, Matthew, Michael and Dan. Mogue Doyle had seven sisters, some of whom came to America and some died in Ireland. One married a MacDaniel in Ireland and was the mother of Harry and Miles MacDaniel and others who did not come to this country; one married a Fortune and was the mother of Walter, James, Sarah and Mary Fortune; one married a Tompkins and was the mother of Nicholas, Patrick, James, Michael and Mary Tompkins; one married a Burns and was the mother of Patrick and Mary Burns; another married a Donaghue and was the mother of Niles Donaghue; another married a Dovan and was the mother of Andy Dovan another married James Doyle who came from Wexford Ireland to North East Margaree in 1830. James Doyle and his wife (Mogues's Sister) had three children John, married Mary MacCarthy; Ann, married Thomas Coakley; and Mary married Dennis MacGarry.

 

"Aunt Ann" daughter of Mogue Doyle who married James Murphy son of Michael Murphy and Sarah Pennell) was mother of Walter, Nick and Mose Murphy. Walter moved to Minnesota and took his father and mother with him to St. Cloud, Minnesota. Walter's daughter Rose, had been married to a German‑American railroad man. He was killed years ago in a railroad accident. This was in 1936 at Fargo, North Dakota.
